But political experts consider a Democratic victory unlikely, especially in a midterm election and in a political climate hostile to the party because of the unpopularity of President Barack Obama and the Affordable Care Act.

“An ideal situation for a Democratic candidate in the 7th District is to run against Todd Akin,” a former Missouri congressman whose controversial comments drew rebukes from fellow Republicans as well as Democrats, “to face a very popular Libertarian candidate and have the Republicans talk about (the president’s) impeachment every chance they get between now and November,” said Stephen J. Farnsworth, professor of political science at the University of Mary Washington.

“Trammell’s fortunes depend much more on whether the Republican says outrageous things and makes mistakes rather than on what Trammell does.”
