“Youngkin didn’t have to take sides and make enemies within the GOP, and that’s a key factor that distinguishes him from the former president,” said Stephen Farnsworth, a political scientist at the University of Mary Washington. “And Democrats have benefited over the last several years from running against Donald Trump but running against an ex-president does not energize voters as much as it did when he was president,” Farnsworth said.
