Professor Stephen Farnsworth of the University of Mary Washington said that Hillary Clinton’s nomination victory was unexpectedly hard-fought as Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders was very effective in mobilizing large numbers of young and liberal voters to support his campaign. Despite falling short, Sanders did push the debate in the Democratic Party to the left in 2016 and in the years ahead, Farnsworth said.
