Stephen Farnsworth, a political scientist at the University of Mary Washington, said the effort by Taylor’s campaign is more likely an effort to split the vote against him.

“The first rule of politics is to figure out a way to divide your opposition,” Farnsworth said. “It’s one of the oldest tricks in the book … it’s right out of John F. Kennedy’s (1946) congressional playbook. And he wasn’t the first to do it.”
