Professor Stephen Farnsworth of the University of Mary Washington said that first years are very important for new presidents, since that is when they have maximum political leverage. Overall, President Trump’s first year has been largely unsuccessful, particularly in terms of winning over public opinion and filling his promises to end the Affordable Care Act and international trade deals, Farnsworth said.
