The politics of Northern Virginia have come to the Fredericksburg region with an Election Day roar.

Tuesday’s victories for Democratic gubernatorial candidate Abigail Spanberger in the long-time Republican bastions of Stafford and Spotsylvania counties, coupled with two Democratic flips in the region’s House of Delegate districts along Interstate 95 (the 64^th in Stafford and the 66^th district in Spotsylvania/Caroline) demonstrate that “the times they are a changin’” around here.

Stephen Farnsworth, a political-science professor at the University of Mary Washington, told WTOP anchor Nick Iannelli and Capitol Hill correspondent Mitchell Miller on Tuesday that the Democratic candidates capitalized on a distaste towards President Donald Trump. “This was very much a repudiation of the Trump policies and their painful impact on Virginia,” Farnsworth said. “An awful lot of votes are cast in Northern Virginia, and a lot of those people are connected to the federal government.”

“I think one of the things we appreciate now is that it is not clear what is disqualifying for a candidate,” said Stephen Farnsworth of the University of Mary Washington, taking note of Jay Jones’ victory in the race for Attorney General despite some deeply problematic texts.

Stephen Farnsworth of the University of Mary Washington feels that party allegiance is very strong, and given the current environment, he thinks just about any Democrat could have won a statewide race this year. “The last decade has been marked by a significant decline in what is defined as acceptable behavior.  We now have a very low bar in terms of anything that may be disqualifying for a candidate,” Farnsworth said.

Stephen Farnsworth, political science professor at the University of Mary Washington, told Newsweek the shift underscores “the nature of politics.” In 2024, Republicans could attack the Biden economy, but now, Democrats can attack the Trump economy as voters remain “unhappy with the status quo,” Farnsworth said.
