“Gillespie’s biggest challenge is Warner’s popularity,” said Stephen J. Farnsworth, a political science professor at University of Mary Washington.

“Warner has been very effective in presenting himself as a moderate Democrat, and he has the ability to compromise and work in a bipartisan way in the Senate. That creates a climate that makes it difficult for Gillespie to argue that Warner is simply an Obama yes man,” Farnsworth said.
