Stephen J. Farnsworth, a professor of political science at the University of Mary Washington, said Libertarian candidates consistently have difficulty getting into debates, but that debate participation is an important factor that will determine whether Sarvis receives more than single-digit support on Election Day.
“It’s hard to draw much attention to yourself if you’re not part of the debates,” Farnsworth said. “The two major parties tend to agree that Democrats and Republicans should control the discourse. The biggest challenge for the Sarvis campaign is something that is totally out of his hands.”
