Seven school boards in Virginia have filed a lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of a new executive order making masks optional in schools. (WTOP)

“The lawsuit offered up by school boards in Northern Virginia and elsewhere makes the argument that the governor’s executive order does not control this process. Rather, it’s controlled by the constitution of Virginia, which gives school boards the authority to make these decisions, and it’s controlled by a law that was passed by the legislature and signed by the previous governor that does say that the CDC guidance should be followed,” said Stephen Farnsworth, professor of political science at the University of Mary Washington.
