University of Mary Washington political science professor Stephen Farnsworth blames the process for drawing congressional boundaries. “Gerrymandering is all too often creating a sense of entitlement among candidates,” he said. “They don’t feel all that much of an obligation to engage with reporters and the general public.”

“If a candidate cannot answer general questions posed by the media,” he said, “the voters are deprived of a major source of information.”
