wjla “The state of the Commonwealth is generally good but Virginia’s fiscal outlook is more cloudy than usual,” said Stephen Farnsworth of the University of Mary Washington.

“The federal government cutbacks will force the state to increase its effort to lure more private sector jobs here,” Farnsworth said. “Traditionally, the state has been largely recession-proof with the large number of federal employees, federal retirees and federal contractors living and working in the Old Dominion.”

“But things,” he said, “are not what they once were.”
