University of Mary Washington political science professor Stephen Farnsworth said American politics have rarely been as contentious as this year. He said he expects longer lines at polling places, particularly in more populous localities.
“Whatever one might think of Clinton or Trump, what’s clear is that this particular matchup is drawing a lot of people to register to vote,” Farnsworth said.
Despite the historically ugly campaign, Farnsworth said he does not anticipate any widespread attempts to intimidate voters at local polls. And he said he thinks law-enforcement officers will be in a position to deal with any issues.
“Whoever wins, this is an election for the ages,” Farnsworth said.
