Professor Stephen Farnsworth of the University of Mary Washington said that Sen. Harris was selected as the Democratic vice presidential nominee in part because she had been very effective as a senator in challenging Trump administration policies. Vice presidential nominees are supposed to be aggressive critics of the other party's nominees, and Harris will be particularly important as a contrast to Joe Biden's "nice guy" temperament, Farnsworth said.
