Gillespie early fundraising paces Warner (Richmond Times-Dispatch)

Stephen J. Farnsworth, professor of political science at the University of Mary Washington, said the first question any Senate challenger has to face is whether he or she can raise enough money to be competitive against an incumbent.

“Ed Gillespie’s first quarter numbers suggest he can raise enough money to be competitive, and that should lead other Republican donors to contribute to the campaign in the coming weeks and months,” Farnsworth said in an email.

Farnsworth said: “It’s going to take money — lots of it — to overcome Mark Warner’s advantages in name recognition and favorability. Of course, Warner is a very effective fundraiser himself, and both parties can expect lots of outside money to slosh into Virginia if the polls show this race tightening.”
