The false claims about the president’s religion give more breathing room to Obama should he want to reflect even briefly on faith during Francis’ visit, papal and presidential watchers said.
“The pope’s visit is an exceptional opportunity for Obama to undermine conservative claims that Democrats hold values that are hostile to religion,” added Stephen Farnsworth, a political science professor at the University of Mary Washington.
