Professor Stephen Farnsworth of the University of Mary Washington said that Republican gubernatorial nominee Ed Gillespie faces a headwind going into the general election. The close race with Corey Stewart demonstrated that many Republican voters want to see the party continue to support Trump aggressively, even though polls show that Trump has less than 40 percent approval among Virginians overall, Farnsworth said.
