Professor Stephen Farnsworth of the University of Mary Washington said that President Trump plans to use the threat of increased trade barriers for imported steel to leverage a better deal in the ongoing renegotiation of the North American Free Trade Agreement.

Delegations from the US, Canada and Mexico have been meeting regularly for months to work out proposed revisions to the three-nation agreement, but have made relatively little progress on the key issues of concern to President Trump, Farnsworth said.
