“There’s a reasonable chance there will be some ugly protests by environmentalists in these politically active times. That’s a risk that a Democratic governor shouldn’t want to take and shouldn’t need to take,” said Stephen Farnsworth, a professor of political science at the University of Mary Washington. “The public hearings coming up in the coming weeks are going to be problematic from the point of view of Northam’s political relationship with environmentalists.”
