Professor Stephen Farnsworth of the University of Mary Washington said that Donald Trump largely succeeded in keeping himself at the center of the first Republican presidential debate, a move that focused attention on personalities, not policy differences among the candidates. Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida also had a good night, Farnsworth said.
