Professor Stephen Farnsworth of the University of Mary Washington said the British voters who said they wanted to leave the European Union were disproportionately older, whiter, and from communities that have seen a loss of manufacturing jobs, in other words the same sort of voters who find Donald Trump appealing in the US. But it is important not to overstate the case, Farnsworth said, as polls do not show the same level of anger in the US as that found in the UK.
