Professor Stephen Farnsworth of the University of Mary Washington said that President Trump’s frustration with Obama administration climate change policies reflects key political realities: the new president’s crucial support in last year’s presidential election came from the industrial heartland of the US, where coal is extracted and used for electricity generation.

With his current low public opinion ratings, Trump’s decision on the Paris climate change agreement will send a key message to those key voters, Farnsworth said.
