Stephen J. Farnsworth, a professor of political science at the University of Mary Washington, said the decision to narrow further an already small electorate for the nomination undermines the Democratic Party’s claim to fairness and openness.
“It speaks of a fear that Morrissey could round up enough supporters to win the nomination in spite of his incarceration, but it’s a cure that’s as bad as the disease,” Farnsworth said.
“When you are talking about what looks to be a pretty hard-fought competition, a more open process would make more sense.”
